The 2014 season of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires continued this past weekend with the inaugural Grand Prix of Indy. This was a road course race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It was such a thrill being there and being able to race on that track. It was like walking onto a court at Wimbledon.
This race weekend and all the other practices definitely brought the highs and lows of racing. In first race, I lasted for only about 10 seconds as I didn’t make it out of Turn 1. Cars were spinning left and right, and I made contact with a car which took me out of the race. In race 2, I had a mechanical problem which made the car harder to control, but I still managed to finish 12th out of 19 entries.
After a few days of rest, I was back out at the track, but this time, the venue was a few miles down the road at Lucas Oil Raceway. I would be doing my first laps ever on an oval track. The experience was great, but it definitely took time to get used to things. Even just looking at the car while it was parked was different. It’s tilted to the side, and the wheels look like they are about to fall off. The car wants to turn left, so it actually takes some effort to make it go straight. I started off slowly, but built up to a better speed after session 2. I was so very excited to get back out there for session 3. Right as the green flag was about to drop to start the session, the rains came, and it poured and poured. The rest of my day was washed out, and I wasn’t able to get back out there again, but it was a great experience!
