Williams has won multiple SKUSA and IKF Karting Championships since he began racing in 2004, and for the past two seasons has been under the tutelage of former Indy 500 Rookie of the Year, Phil Giebler. He was one of four drivers to receive the World Speed Motorsports Rising Star Award in 2015. That award provided him with a test with the team, and the opportunity to be considered for the scholarship.
“We were impressed by Carter’s performance on and off the track, and we enjoyed working with him at the WSM Rising Star Award test day,” stated WSM President Telo Stewart. When it came time to review all the drivers we had connected with in the pre-season Carter’s name kept coming to the top of the list. When Steve (VMB President) and I met to decide how we would best use the remaining 2016 scholarship funding we both agreed that helping Carter make the transition from Karting into open wheel would be a great opportunity for us and Carter.”
2014/2015 VMB Scholarship Driver Jaden Conwright just announced that he has signed with the top FIA F4 team in Italy, and will be spending his 2016 racing season competing in Europe. 2015 VMB Scholarship Driver Michael Avansino won the season championship in the FormulaSPEED class, and will spend the 2016 season focusing on his last year of high-school and training for upcoming race opportunities.
Carter Williams Quote:
This is a dream come true to win the VMB Driver Development Scholarship. I have been working so hard for the past 11 years in karting for this opportunity. I cannot thank Steve Brisentine and Telo Stewart enough for awarding me the incredible opportunity. I would like to thank Matt and Enzo for their unbelievable effort in the shootout and I look forward to teaming up with Jonathan for the 2016 season. I could not have dreamed of a better team to start my formula car career with than World Speed Motorsports. I am so proud and honored to represent the VMB Driver Development Program and cannot wait to share my experience with my fellow go karters and fans. I would also like to thank my sponsors and the people who have supported my throughout my career. I would not be here without their support. I cannot wait to get behind the wheel of the new GEN2 FormulaSPEED and work to bring race wins and a championship to the team in 2016.
