For 2020 VMB Driver Development has selected karting champion William Ferguson to compete in the Formula Pro USA F4 Western Championship. Ferguson started racing karts at 10 years old in the spring of 2015. During his rookie year he won 6 out of 11 races and was on the podium nine times. Since then he has gone on to secure three major West Coast karting championships, including the 2019 ROK Sonoma Karting Championship presented by Sanzaru.
The WSM Rising Star Awards have been provided to up and coming championship caliber racers for over 25 years. Past award recipients have gone on to race in Formula One, win races in NASCAR, win the 24 Hours or Daytona and 12 Hours Sebring, and secure the Indy Lights Championship. For seven consecutive seasons VMB Driver Development has taken the finest winners of the WSM Rising Star Awards, and given them a scholarship opportunity for the upcoming season.
“Each year we reach out to trusted industry professionals for recommendations for our Rising Star Award and the VMB Scholarship,” stated World Speed President Telo Stewart. “William’s name came up in multiple conversations, and he was put on our shortlist. Due to all racing getting put on pause due to COVID19, we had to make some adjustments in the selection process. Our plan is to get some testing in before our first race, and do our best to set William up for success.” The VMB principals reviewed William’s resume and recommendations, and then spoke with him on a conference call. Once the call was over, it was a quick decision to provide him with this opportunity. After the call, Steve Brisentine of VMB stated “We are really looking forward to helping William reach his goals, and getting him onto the F4 podium!”
William Ferguson: “I am very grateful for the amazing opportunity that was presented to me by VMB Driver Development and World Speed Motorsports. I’m really looking forward to my relationship with World Speed, and this will be a great opportunity for me to not only perfect my ability on track but off the track as well. Due to theCovid-19 pandemic there has only been one F4 Western Championship race so far, so I’ll definitely be chasing the championship this year. It would be awesome if I got to race at COTA for the F4 U.S. Championship finale during my rookie season.
I would like to thank everyone in the local racing community for all the support they have given me over the last couple years, especially SpeedSense Motorsports. I have gained so much racing experience in the past two years and I doubt I could have made it this far without everyone’s support. Thank you; Lisa Caceres at Race Karts! Inc, Gary and all the GFC guys, Steve Cameron at Cameron Racing, and Cameron Karting.”
